Working towards a common goal
There are many worldwide initiatives in the field of sustainability. The World Wide Fund for Nature are building a future where human and nature live in harmony. The International Union for Conservation of Nature aims to help the world to find pragmatic solutions to environment and development challenges. In the Netherlands, the Institute for Sustainable Innovation and Development supports initiatives to accelerate sustainable innovation.
In 2010 the United Nations has initiated a worldwide focus on the protection and promotion of nature, biodiversity and sustainability. In the Netherlands, this development towards more biodiversity and sustainability is evident, for instance, in the Coalition for Biodiversity a coalition of public authorities, public initiatives and nature organisations as Staatsbosbeheer as well as private companies.
Irene van Lippe-Biesterfeld is patron of the Coalition for Biodiversity. To facilitate the process of working towards a sustainable future, she aims for restoring the individual inner connection between mankind and nature. For this purpose she has founded the Lippe-Biesterfeld NatureCollege Foundation in 2001 and Bergplaas Nature Reserve in 2000.
In South Africa, the ‘Spirit of Nature’ philosophy has been interpreted in terms of ‘Spirit of the Wild’, a three-week training course for nature park guides, endorsed by the South African National Parks, in partnership with the Tshwane University of Technology.
